Seria 5 a suferit mai multe schimbari de look, dar niciuna nu a fost atat de radicala incat sa creeze rumoare si diferente de opinie (exceptand, bineinteles, modelul E60 desenat de Chriss Bangle, care, intradevar a schimbat perceptia asupra unui model BMW). In acest week-end are loc una dintre cele mai importante si spectaculoase curse ale anului pe Nurburing, etapa a saptea a sezonului 2013 de DTM. Cu 74 de ani in urma, pe 21 mai 1939 un roman castiga una dintre cele mai importante curse pe Nurburing la cursa lui de debut pe acest circuit.
